Mimicking Birds

It’s a story of mice and birds. Mimicking Birds introduced their first album to the world in March. Recorded in the home studio of Isaac Brock, the frontman of Modest Mouse and owner of their label, Glacial Pace, the self-titled album seems to nestle itself in the thick-wooded nature of the Northwestern landscape, sounding intimate and mesmerizing enough for a small campfire recital but striking enough for the festival-feasting crowd.

Mimicking Birds are lead singer and guitarist Nate Lacy, guitarist Tim Skellenger and drummer Aaron Hanson—of whom are no strangers to live performances; the band spent considerable time building its fan base in 2009 opening for Modest Mouse.

Pretty Little Empire

Pretty Little Empire is a Midwest band from St. Louis, MO, formed in 2008. They put out their first full-length album “sweet sweet hands” in October 2009.  They have just finished their follow up album which should be ready this winter.

”Pretty Little Empire trades in sweet acoustic melancholy, a kind of slow-drip dream-folk that skirts the edges of twang and pop.” – Christian Schaeffer – RFT.

Don’t let the lo-fi, almost twee charm of Pretty Little Empire’s debut album, Sweet Sweet Hands, fool you. Onstage, the band, led by singers and guitarists Justin Johnson and William Godfred, are likely to plug in and use the power to drive their elusive hooks home with rock joyousness and clamor. Somewhere between the Velvet Underground at its poppiest and Nick Drake at his most spare, Pretty Little Empire may be fresh faces on the indie-rock scene, but its harmonies and songs sound like they’re built to last.
